The 20th (XX) observance party/fund raising event ROD’S DAY has been scheduled for Saturday afternoon & evening, July 14, 2012, at MO’s Place in Playa del Rey, CA. Rod Fasone succumbed to a 2 year battle against colon cancer in 1992 at age 21… friends and family…with 20 years of help from residents of Playa del Rey, California…have been raising funds at an annual party/reunion for cancer research…in Rod’s memory, ever since…2012 will be the 20th.
Why Rod Fasone? …While all cancer deaths are horrible losses…and hopefully preventable in the future…occasionally a young person…this one of only 21 years…impacts friends, family, neighbors and most who come in contact with them… in a very unforgettable way. That was Rod Fasone. So much so that 20 years later they are still gathering to toast his memory and friendship.
ROD’S DAY was a party started the summer after Rod’s loss…to be a free admission (the way Rod would have wanted)…fun “hug your friends and toast life” (the way Rod would have wanted) Hawaiian themed party (cuz Hawaiian is fun & easy to decorate and dress) where one can feel good about donating to cancer research even if they can only afford a few dollars…and a happy celebration of a life.
Since its inception ROD’S DAY has seen the repeated attendance of many of Rod’s high school and college friends…traveling from all across the country…to honor their friend’s memory…one that has forever impacted their lives…and one they teach their children about the importance of friendship.
In 2012 we are expecting most of the friends…and their wives …for year 20 special event…as well as most of the Playa del Rey residents…as usual. A common ROD’S DAY question is “are the ‘guys’ coming this year? Who will be here?” Well, many will be on hand for the 20th observance.
A seemingly UN-changing beach community, Playa del Rey…within the city limits of Los Angeles near LAX…remains an enclave of neighbors who cherish the “casual – beach side” lifestyle epitomized in the ’60’s and ’70’s music and movies…its a ‘Beach Boy’ type town…little known to most in LA…and liked that way. Through the past 19 years ROD’S DAY has grown and reduced in scope to best match effort = donations results…and it’s always been supported & coordinated by…Playa del Rey resident volunteers & donors…up to 60 of them at it’s peak as a local rock concert and festival.
Now. it’s is a local permanent event, and only a few remain that even knew Rod Fasone…but they love the “feel” of the event. Families have coordinated their reunions to be held at ROD’S DAY, and at least 2 local married couples met at ROD’S DAY.
For the past 12 years the funds raised at ROD’S DAY have been donated to the research efforts of Dr. Anton Bilchik, a world renown researcher and clinician in colon and pancreatic cancer.
Dr. Bilchik and his research partner are the moving force behind the California Oncology Research Institute (CORI), affiliated with the UCLA Medical Center. While an independent..NIH granted…research facility…CORI partnered with UCLA to use their lab facilities so that funds for research could be used for just that…and not duplicate research equipment purchases.
For those attending in 2012 we recommend staying;…our first choice…at The Inn at Playa del Rey…tell them you are coming for ROD’S DAY…they are long-time supporters. The Inn is a short walk from MO’s Place the event home for the past 7 years. Other near-by hotels, within a short cab ride (a significant need after more than a few toasts to “friends”) are: Marina Del Rey Hotel, Jamaica Bay Inn, Marina International Hotel. Check out any of these web sites for your “d’ruthers” …they are all very nice and within a cab ride of MO’s Place the home of ROD’S DAY…and close to the beach …as well as the Venice Beach Boardwalk, for an adventure.
You can follow the developing celebration of 2012 at the ROD’S DAY Facebook page, and add any comment you feel appropriate. “Like” or “Share” our ROD’S DAY page and you will get updates as they are posted.
We raise donations through raffles and a silent…and often out-loud…auction of better more expensive items…so if you can donate gifts for the auction(s) or raffle please do.
