This is (what’s left of) the Aral sea on the border of former Russian satellite nations of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. In the 1960’s and before it was the 3rd largest lake in the world…yes world…over 26,000 square miles…26,000. Big…and deep then too.
Why should you care about no water in the “-stan” nations? Because it is a symptom of what happens when countries that have water…like US…abuse its use. With millions of new inhabitants being added to this “blue” planet, water is more in demand everywhere, even in many areas of the US…ask the drought plagued Texans this year.
And what about those unfortunates in the US who either can light flames from their faucets or drink it at peril of stomach distress at best and cancer at worst…thanks to unfetterd Fracking…’Google’ it…learn more.
The heavily tax subsidized cotton industry has been over using US water for years, as have many other countries. We need to realize that cherishing water (link to water.org) for the future is as important as cherishing clean air.
When one adds the poisons of pesticides and chemical fertilizers to this horrible mix of ingredients (follow this link) to raise more cotton…it doesn’t take much imagination to project the above images to your favorite body of water in the future, so you can have a cheaper t-shirt or a more expensive pair of jeans.
